This past Spring I created a gift guide for Father’s Day with my husband’s favorite things. Like actual things we use all the time and really enjoy! One of the ideas was personalized cornhole. We have had cornhole boards that we love playing with outside this summer, but haven’t been able to get the jazzed up boards out of my mind!

Then my ah-ha moment- this was the perfect easy little summer DIY project! And the best part? My trusty little sidekick, Cricut Joy, makes it crazy easy. The possibilities are endless for how to personalize and decorate these boards as well!

What You Need:

Cornhole boards

masking tape

paint

paintbrush

Cricut Joy

Cricut Joy Smart Vinyl

Weeding tool for Cricut vinyl

The first step was making the pattern on the board I wanted and marking it with masking tape. I wanted my boards to have a little color and then a space for an encouraging mantra- more on that to come!

After the boards were marked with the tape, I painted. I used a deep blue watercolor acrylic from Martha Stewart because my backyard decor is a mix of navy, blues and whites. Just a small bottle was more than enough. Of course you can choose whatever colors work best for you and your yard!

Once the paint was on and dry- I did about 3 coats and blue and also added some white to the top. Again, just a plain white acrylic paint. Nothing fancy!

Now…say hello to my little friend. Cricut Joy coming in hot and she’s about to make these cornhole boards even better!

Using the Cricut Joy

For this project, I used my Cricut Joy and the Smart Vinyl which is the easiest Cricut product I’ve ever used. I’m obsessed with the fact that you don’t have to use a mat. All you do is feed the straight vinyl into the machine. INSANELY easy. Like life changing easy- 15 minutes or less and you’ve got a new impressive project!

I wanted my boards to say two different encouraging mantras. Cornhole can be frustrating so I wanted whoever was playing to be reminded that they can do it and their best is all that matters. And by whoevers playing I mean my kids who like doing things well and get frustrated when things don’t always work out that way. #parentingisfun.

Board #1: You Got This!

Board #2: You’re Doing Great!

In Cricut’s Design Space, I used the text feature in the font, Alexis Mattox, to write my words. Weld the words together so the letters cut as one chunk vs. each individual letter (easier to stick to your project), then you’re ready to cut!

Choose the material you have, feed it in, and it’s go time! The Joy does all the work for you! It’s seriously so easy.

I used the Weeding tool to take the vinyl off the sticker back and help guide it onto then blue stripe on the board and voila! Two brand new cornhole boards with a motivating facelift for my backyard to enjoy each summer!

SO cute right? Less than an hour (excluding paint to dry) and these boring blank cornhole boards are now adorable, encouraging games pieces that match my backyard! Something my family will enjoy all summer long!
