Meet Mom of 4 and founder of Togather Moments, Jennifer Zumbiel!

I am so excited for you to meet my friend, Jennifer! Jennifer is a mom, wife, and entrepreneur from Kentucky. After many years of dreaming and scheming, she is changing the way families all across the country eat dinner with her business, Togather Moments, and mealtime game, Togather, Togather is that dinner table game solution to catch all these moments and all those in between, where you just want to slow down, focus, and be present with one another.

In this episode, Jennifer is going to share with us her tips on getting our families more engaged with one another at the dinner table, how we can put the focus back on connecting with those we love on a deeper level, and some tips on how to make this a realistic goal in our very busy lives!

The game is a book of stickers that have different prompts on them to spark conversation and connection. The goal is that you choose a category, pass the book, grab a sticker, and start talking. Everyone is involved. Everyone is heard. Everyone is important. How cool is that?

Jennifer was kind enough to send a book to my family for us to try, and we loved it immediately.  Evie (5) loves to pick her sticker and then we all share our answer to it. Some things we’ve talked about are new things we’d like to learn, sharing a warm fuzzy about someone else at the table, or discussing what we believe our family values should be. Every time we use Togather, I’m surprised at what comes out of my daughter’s mouth. And then it makes me a little sad because I don’t know if I’d learn these amazing, awesome things about her or hear her thinking about a topic if I wasn’t prompted to ask about that specific thing.

Dinner Time Mom Tip

Wait until all the food is done and ready to eat before anyone sits down at the table. I am totally guilty of giving the kids their food first, and then they are almost done by the time my husband and I sit down. Having us all sit down at the same time helps our chances of them sitting, staying, and having a conversation at the table with us!

Why Are Dinner Conversations Important?

Togather is an amazing resource that does a lot of the work for starting conversations going, but it’s ultimate goal is for you to get in the habit and routine of having meaningful discussions to build deeper connections with your family members. Talking about things other than your day or what happened at school allow for you to get to know your family members on a new level. You’re able to get some insight on the way they approach new situations, what they really think about different issues, and hopes/dreams you may not have known. The cool thing is that having intentional conversations lead to many discussions you definitely would not have had if it weren’t for the specific question. For example, when Jennifer’s daughter brought up a situation at a friend’s house that made her uncomfortable. The sticker made her think of it, and together as a family, they problem solved what to do to get out of uncomfortable situations. That most likely would never have happened if they weren’t sharing “something that made them say ‘that’s crazy’!”

There is a level of comfort and intimacy that stems from open sharing and dialogue. I know that I want my family to know that we are a safe group to talk to. If you want to discuss or share something, you won’t be met with judgment or criticism. By practicing these habits, you are instilling values, as well as critical conversational life skills, within your kids from a very young age. It’s so important and something I hope you will try out with your families this week!
