We’re used to big dinners and running around with cousins and eating charcuterie with grandma. Unfortunately, that’s not in the cards for most of us…so how we still make this fun and memorable for our family?
When it comes to Thanksgiving this year, I’ve got 2 main focuses:
- Involve the kids- they are running the show.
- Gratitude is the only attitude.
Thanksgiving Day Game Plan
Thanksgiving is a holiday all about food. That food has meaning and tradition and memories all wrapped up in it. I definitely want to have some of the OG heavy hitters on the table, but I also don’t care what else is on there. So because of this, I’m giving the kids control. They get to choose what they want for Thanksgiving this year. And if they choose Annie’s mac and cheese, cool. If they choose pancakes, rock on.
My main plan? Turn Thanksgiving on it’s head and make it easy for me and FUN for them. I want them to remember this year as the year they got to pick Thanksgiving dinner and we sat on the floor and ate it. Or the year I let them eat pie straight from the pan with a fork.
Something special for us in particular this year, is that we are about to close on our dream house! For months, we’ve been in this weirdo unpredictable limbo of housing with selling our house, moving to a rental and not knowing if we were going to have anywhere to go after December. BUT we found our house, got our offer accepted and get keys any second! YAY!
So with all that being said, we have so much to be thankful for BUT we also are going make a damn memory at that house with Thanksgiving dinner on a blanket on the floor of our new house we aren’t moving into until it’s remodeled. Thanksgiving picnic while dreaming about the kids’ new rooms and what we want to do in the backyard here we come!
I also am going to let them choose what they want to wear. As a family you can decide if you want to have a fancy dinner where you get all dressed to impress OR if you want to show up in jammies and have a Thanksgiving jammie picnic. The freeing part? You get to do what YOU want! No fighting over clothes, no bribing for wearing the tights. EASY. Take that win.
How can we help others in our local community or lives? Are their local families that need groceries? How can we show gratitude to essential workers? How can we meet, connect and give back to our new community we just moved into?? Who do we know that’s having a tough time emotionally and needs cheering up?
Gratitude is a giant focus in our family and I really want to give them some tasks and activities to focus on to show them how important it is to see the things we have to be grateful for and that we’re heading into a season of need for others and we have the ability to help. And even further, I want to show them the impact they can have on people they actually know.
I want to show my kids that we take on a mindset of gratitude and service, even if we’re disappointed and sad about missing the holiday with our family. We are still together, have SO much to be grateful for, and have the privilege of helping others in our lives that need it.
