Meet Your Best Friend and Coach, Emilie!

Emilie Karun is a mom of FOUR and a personal development coach for moms who want more. You guys, she is such a doll.  She’s super funny, down to earth and drops major truth bombs like they’re no big deal. This was such a powerful conversation for me. Emilie basically gave me a therapy/coaching session live on air and I walked away with SO many takeaways on how I can really be pushing myself for more in a way that’s realistic and authentic to me, not to others.

This comparison trap is a super slippery slope. We can get real hung up on what that mom is doing or wearing or parenting.  It makes us second guess ourselves constantly, which makes our confidence and belief in ourselves plummet. Emilie is here to change that. In this episode, we discuss how to stop comparing yourself with others (especially other moms) once and for all, how to step into something more and not feel guilty about it, and why self care is essential to us being better moms and partners. This is an episode where you might want to take some notes because Emilie is taking us to personal development church! Preach, girl!

Slow Down, Forget the Rules, and Write Your Own Happily Ever After

Emilie empowers her clients and blog readers to develop their own idea on what it means to be successful, happy, or a good mom. They get to decide what works for them and find a way to not just survive, but to thrive in motherhood. We need to slow down, let go of opinions, and focus on what matters the most to us.

I am so passionate about this subject because it’s something that is on my heart everyday. I get a lot of messages from listeners and other moms “wishing” they could do what I do, or have the courage to try something they’re passionate, or have the skills needed. Listen. Every single thing I have done in these 2 years, I have figured out on my own, because I found something that was important enough to give my attention to. I wanted to learn more so I did. The Memories in Moments podcast? It’s a result from YouTube tutorials, Google answering questions, and a free webinar I took from a successful podcaster. My website? Built from scratch following Google screenshot tutorials on YouTube. When you find that thing that is creating a fire in your heart, the game changes. You make the time, you find the answers, and you get it done. It’s what I am meant to do for myself, not as a mom, but as a woman. Now…what’s your thing?

Getting Out of the Comparison Trap

The first step? Realizing there is zero right way to do something. Often you hear people’s very loud opinions…that have nothing to do with the thing you are comparing anyway. There is no standard, so stop wasting time and energy on something making yourself feel bad or unworthy. Overtime, accepting that realization starts to get easier so you can check your intentions. Am I choosing to do this because I want to? Or because it will please someone else? That’s a good quick gut check. The second step is figuring out what feels right to YOU, not them. What is right to you is the thing that works for you and your family. Think about the power you are giving to others. Do you even care about the people’s opinions you are seeking…or is this what Becky from high school may or may not think? Stepping back and really surveying my thinking on some of these issues was a huge step for me. I was able to notice that I was totally putting value in people I didn’t care about before what I actually wanted to do or say. This is not an overnight switch. This is something I am still continuing to work at daily, but when you get a little step further in your journey of not comparing or caring about other’s opinions, it’s such a freeing feeling!

Also, remember the opinions of others are on them. The comments and judgments are a reflection on them, not you. A good self check is to stop and think about what is being compared. Is this something you even like to do? Is it something you are good at/not the best at? If you don’t even care about it…then why take the comment to heart? There is no shoulds here. “I should be doing this or that.” No. You do you, and let others do themselves.

Your job? Don’t explain or defend yourself. “Thats what I like to do!” and leave it at that. There is zero reason to explain or convince your actions to someone else. They are never going to change their thinking anyway!

Self Care: Essential to You Being Your Best

More than just a bath or a pedicure, my friend!

1. What is it you need to recharge?

2. Where and how can you schedule it in your day every single day?

Before you push back on this, be realistic on the time spent on that self care thing that recharges you. Is it 10 minutes of using a new product in the bathroom? 10 minutes to meditate or read a juicy book? Maybe you’re like me and working on your business is your self care. The goal of self care is to feed your mental self. You need to take care of that so you can go out in the world and stand up to the Becky’s and those you are tempted to compare yourselves to. Connect with yourself regularly and non-negotiable.

Your Job:

1. What is self care to you?

2. Make it a non-negotiable part of your day- how, when and where am I going to fit this in today? Some days 5 minutes, someday an hour, but you make it happen.

Closing thoughts: happiness, balance, success, etc. is available to you right now…but it’s up to you to claim it. You get to choose! Nothing will change until you decide to change.
