Nest Notes

The idea for Nest Notes was inspired by Chase’s grandmother, who kept a journal recording all of her special moments. It has become the story of her life and a document of the family store, and definitely a cherished keepsake. Knowing she didn’t want the pretty squares of Instagram to be her family’s keepsake…and the realization that she didn’t have time to create a traditional baby book, Chase fell back on her design background to create something personal. She designed a visualization including what was important to her and her family. The things she thought her daughter would want to see looking back on her first year as a baby. Things like her first Halloween costume, first baby signs and words, and other special memories she cherished from her first year. Totally personal for her family and her experience in her first year of motherhood.

Now Chase creates posters and other visuals for your to personalize for your own kids and family! The unique and special memories and milestones for your family.  You can get first year posters, personalized posters, and Year of You Books. Chase generously gave both of my kids (ages 5 and 2) a year of you book for their age, and let me tell you, it is the CUTEST thing ever! More on Year of You Books below! Shop for darling Nest Note keepsakes in her shop!

She is also in the thick of creating a Nest Notes app! This app will create the easy opportunity for you to record something special, funny, or important and then once you’ve recorded various things you’d love to remember about your child and their developmental stage. you can compile those recordings into one of Nest Notes’ signature posters! In the time it takes to send a text, you can have a gorgeous, personalized keepsake representing the story of your child shipped to your door. So cool.

Little Way to Record Memories That You May Not Have Thought Of!

One of my favorite tips from Chase was her suggestion to use the audio recorder on your phone! We learned from Rebecca Ellison in Episode 21 how to take super sneaky awesome pics of our kids, but Chase introduced us to the recording! How adorable to record your bedtime routine, or how your kid says a phrase in a funny little way right now. I LOVED that idea and it’s something I’ve totally started doing since talking with Chase!

Chase also suggests getting your kids involved in their recording! Hello, so smart! Chase designed these darling Year of You books for kids to take ownership for their own memories and experiences! It’s a super fun way to capture your kids’ personalities in the stage they’re in. They have total control over how they want to shine in their books. The color and direction of the book really is determined by them and it shows the value of having them document their own milestones. These books are available for ages 1-12. As the kids are younger, it’s obviously more of a collaboration, and as they get older, they take more responsibility. It’s so fun to sit down and do this together and share memories and retell stories (which you know kids LOVE!).

Ask them to tell you about a special time, memory, or experience you just had. When is the last time you sat down with your kid and talked about what you just did, or something they remember, To hear something from their point of view and to get the memories right out of their head, and record it either on video or with your audio recording is something so special. We take the photos, the videos of them doing stuff, but not always just their direct words and thoughts. What a representation of where they are in their growth!

How fun to save a grocery receipt, or a receipt from a clothing store to look back on what kinds of things you bought at that stage in your life. So interesting for the kids to look back on that one day and laugh or be amazed!

Making Recording a Habit

Have this be top of mind. Being present in the moment is most important, but when you think of something, jot it down or get your audio recorder out. Think about Chase’s story about her grandmother recording a couple lines about her life every now and then. It doesn’t have to be everyday, or documenting as it happens, but when you think of something you want to record, remember, and show your kids one day, make it a priority to document it. Just in a quick way!

Get your kids involved! Put some of this recording on them, especially if they are a little older! They will love to look back one day and read or hear how they saw or experienced different things.
