Meet the First Official Man on the Memories in Moments Podcast, Drew Formsma!

Teaching my kids generosity is something that intimidates me. I feel like we are going to be trapped in this world of everything revolves around them forever. They are definitely claiming stake in this selfie world. I want to make sure I am doing everything I can when it comes to modeling and instilling this value of generosity in my kids. I got an email a few weeks back from this 16 year old kid named Drew Formsma. I wrote it off at first, to be honest, because why in the heck would this kid be interested in being on my podcast for moms? But then I read his pitch again, looked him up and was crazy impressed! I loved his experience in this topic, and I thought having a kid that has grown up living out these practices to the point of them being a habit would make for a really interesting and valuable conversation! Drew Formsma is a 16 year old motivational speaker and author of Everyday Generosity: Becoming a Generous Family in a Selfie World. To say this kid is impressive is an understatement! In this episode, Drew shares his experience being raised in a generous home and gives parents tips for teaching generosity in a way their kids will understand. He breaks being generous down into 7 categories, which were really eye opening and gave myself a lot of clarity and direction when approaching this value with my kids.

The goal? To teach our kids that this is something we get to do, not have to do. We are lucky that we have opporunities to be generous and being generous feels just as good on the giving end as it does in the receiving.

7 Ways to Lead a Generous Life

In Drew’s book, he breaks generosity down in such a simple, straight-forward way. I really liked having the 7 ways outlined and separated because it helped me get a better understanding of the different ways we can show generosity, and also helped give me a plan on how to explain them to my kids. Often we think of being generous in donations and charity…but it’s actually way more simple than that!

We can be generous with…

1. Our Thoughts

2. Our Words

3. Our Money

4. Our Time

5. Our Influence

6. Our Attention

7. Our Stuff

MEE: Model, Encourage, and Engage

MEE is the way that parents can teach their kids about living this generous life. Modeling is number one and the most important- kids do what they see. Encouraging to be generous is also essential…but be clear that this isn’t forcing. When we force to give we give this a negative feeling and it makes it feel yucky. Engaging in conversations and sharing experiences and stories about generosity fuels the conversations and makes us feel good. This reinforces the fact that being generous feels just as good to us and the recipient of the generosity.

Drew’s Book: Everyday Generosity- Becoming a Generous Family in a Selfie World outlines all of these ways to be generous, talking points and stories from Drew and the lives of those close to him of their experiences with generosity. I really loved how the book was outlined and broken down. The stories were engaging and great examples of the content being taught in the book. It definitely made me think about my own relationship with generosity and how I want to teach my kids this value. While I did enjoy the book, it does have many religious references and connections. We talk about the main content in the episode, but if you want to go further and read Drew’s book, I just wanted to share a head’s up just in case that isn’t your cup of tea!

I Like Giving Videos

One of the resources Drew suggested was to watch the short little videos on stories of generosity on his dad’s company’s website, I Like Giving. These videos show quick little acts of generosity brought to life that would be a good start to inspiring these conversations with our families.
