My job as a personal branding coach and strategist is helping YOU show up as yourself on the internet and make a buttload of money doing it. And I’m actually pretty damn good at it.

Recently, I did an ask me anything day on my Instagram stories and here is one of the questions that came up:

How do you recommend someone first starting to build the personal side to their brand?

LOVE THIS QUESTION!

First, yay you for wanting to show up and be a real, relatable person to your community! Step 1, check!

Second, brand builders here we come!

You may have heard me talk about expert buckets before. These are your 3-4 topics or brand pillars that you could share about all day that make you money using your unique expertise and industry knowledge. The solutions and desired outcomes that people come to you for, recommend you for, etc.

For me, these expert buckets are: personal branding for small business owners, small business PR or media features, and building a business that funds your life not runs your life.

Now, in addition to our expert buckets…our content needs BRAND BUILDERS.

These don’t even really have to do with your expert buckets or even really your business and what you do. These are what make you YOU!

What do you love? What do your friends/family associate with you? What are your hobbies? Fave foods? Places? Shows? What makes you a real person with interests outside your biz??

MY BRAND BUILDERS:

-Bravo (Vanderpump, Housewives, Below Deck…all my besties and I’ve literally grown up with them all)

-relatable mom life/humor

-scratch margs

-steamy books I read on my Kindle

-kids Friday night snack dinner

-ADHD

-my house remodel (past example)

-lake life living (future example for summer months)

Brand builders are sprinkled into your content. They’re featured in your stories, referenced in your captions, mentioned in emails. They are not full dedicated posts, emails, blogs, etc- but they are the frosting on top of the cake (frost yourself- who got that How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days reference?!) leaving little top of mind reminders for people to be thinking of you throughout their day.

THAT is how you start showing up as yourself on the internet, building a personal brand that people connect with and want to support. The more they like and relate to you- the easier it is to build a relationship. And we all know, sales come from relationships.
